Figure Skating Director – Cool Sports

Department: Ice Rink

The job description below is a Full-time position requiring at a minimum of 40 hours of work per week. Your weekly agenda will be supervised by the General Manager. You will work out your schedule details with your supervisor.

Essential Functions include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Oversees, supervises and promotes/advertises all figure skating programs, including Learn to Skate and freestyle sessions. Responsible for growth and retaining numbers.

  • • Responsible for revenue collecting through the Max Galaxy software, create “items” on the POS side, and to make sure all info/classes/schedules are up to date and current.
  • • Creates and Enforces freestyle guidelines

Develops program curriculum and instructional materials for learn-to-skate programs, and coordinates other recreational skating programs (i.e., home school, Girl Scouts, school field trips, and birthday parties).

Finishes reports/evaluations for each session of programming to track profit/loss targets within all programs.

Recommends program schedules, goals and budgets to the General Manager regarding the Learn to Skate, JSA and other figure skating programs.

Develops staff manuals for figure skating and related operations.

Develops and distributes flyers and newsletters for figure skating classes, clinics, and workshops.

Works with marketing coordinators and General Manager to promote and market programs, speaking to groups and the media about skating programs as needed.

  • • Updates Facebook, website (including Max Galaxy) and other promotional areas to keep information current and relative for customers.

Identifies and solves program-related problems, and handles complaints and requests of the customers. Returns calls and emails in a timely fashion.

Attends professional conferences, seminars, workshops, and/or classes to remain current on trends and innovations in the ice industry.

Serves as the liaison between figure skating associations/club and Cool Sports. Books, collects payments and documentation needed for all private events associated with figure skating, works with Cool Sports Event Manager on any logistics with these rentals.

Drives ice resurfacer as scheduled or needed.

Supervisory Functions 

Serves as manager on duty on a rotating basis to ensure Cool Sports senior staff presence at all times when Cool Sports is open.

Participates in the hiring process for skating instructors and ensures their compliance with Cool Sports policies and Ice Center procedures.

Supervises an assistant skating director and all independent skating contractors.

Monitors and tracks time and attendance for approximately 15 seasonal employees, documenting leave use and availability for work scheduling.

Makes recommendations concerning employment, dismissal, reprimands and related actions for seasonal employees.

Other Items 

Figure Skating Director is allowed to perform private coaching on his/her owns time. This private coaching cannot interfere with daily or weekly hours of work described above.

Qualifications

1) Education/Experience: Graduation from College, with a Sports Management degree preferred; minimum of five (5) years’ experience supervising figure skating programs, or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Post Graduate Degree equals one year of necessary education/experience.

2) General Skill Levels: Knowledge of ice arena operations, including specialized knowledge of figure skating. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to train and supervise subordinate personnel. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors, and the public. Ability to effectively

communicate and relate with staff and the general public. Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions. Ability to use word processing, spreadsheet, Internet and e-mail software, and other applications as needed by the division. Ability to prepare detailed work reports. Ability to direct, appraise and discipline staff in a respectful and constructive manner. Previous experience operating an ice resurfacer is preferred.

3) Certificates and Licenses: Valid Tennessee Driver’s license; USFS/PSA or other skating associations certificate of coaching, CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications; or ability to obtain all necessary certifications within 30 days of date of hire.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly manages independent contractors in the division. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Cool Sports policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include participating in the interviewing, hiring, and training of seasonal employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and handling complaints and resolving problems, subject to the review of the General Manager.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work is performed in both an office environment and an ice rink environment where temperature variances are necessary, and will include regular weekend and evening hours. Must be able to sustain a fairly steady active physical exertion with some lifting and/or continuous standing, walking, or skating. Proficient skating skills are required.

Ice Resurfacer

Summary

This position is for an ice resurfacer operator position at Cool Sports and is under the direct supervision of the Operations Manager. The purpose of this position is to provide a quality ice surface and clean facility for all users. Employees in this classification represent Cool Sports in a professional manner while performing the duties described below.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Maintain the ice surface, dasher boards and glass for quality and safety
  2. Operate and maintain the ice resurfacer and edger
  3. Keep locker rooms and shower rooms clean
  4. Keep rink area and spectator are clean
  5. Janitorial duties as assigned
  6. Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings and mandatory training sessions.
  7. Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
  8. Participate in any in-service training.
  9. Present a neat, clean appearance, and have good hygiene
  10. Perform other duties as requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Must be at least 18 years of age with current valid driver’s license.
  2. Ability to perform continuous physical activity.
  3. Must communicate effectively orally in a one-on-one and in group settings.
  4. Must be able to effectively communicate with the public and disseminate information with confidence.
  5. Hourly wage based on years’ experience and training

Party Host

Summary

This position is for a Party Host/Hostess position at Cool Sports and is under the direct supervision of the Events Manager. The purpose of this position is to provide a fun and energetic party environment for all users. Employees in this classification represent Cool Sports in a professional manner while performing the duties described below.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Maintains a clean and safe environment for patrons and staff.
  2. Greets Parties as they enter
  3. Sets up birthday party rooms.
  4. Cleans up birthday party rooms.
  5. Executes policies and procedures professionally and accurately.
  6. Communicates accurate and professional information to patrons.
  7. Engages party at front desk, takes them through the facility to the party room area, and gets them pizza, drinks, and is responsible for all other aspects of the party.
  8. Responsible for attending staff meetings and trainings.
  9. Ensures highest quality of birthday party experience for guest of honor and parent(s).
  10. Acts as team member and assists in other capacity as needed.
  11. Responsible for completing all other tasks as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Ability to apply routine practices, rules/regulations, procedures to techniques that are relevant to assigned tasks.
  2. Previous Customer Service experience preferred.
  3. Ability to balance customer service and safety while creating a fun but orderly atmosphere.
  4. Be a minimum age of 15 years old.
  5. Have or be able to obtain CPR/First Aid/AED certification.
  6. Ability to present a neat, clean appearance and good hygiene.
  7. Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends.

Skate Guard

Summary

Skate Guards will oversee and ensure the safety of customers using Cool Sports, while creating a fun, safe, and exciting environment.  They are responsible for ensuring that all customers behave in an appropriate manner and that all rules and regulations are followed at all times.  This position is under the direction of the Events Manager.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Monitor the facility for unsafe conditions, and report such conditions to the manager.
  2. Know and enforce Ice Center rules, and emergency/safety procedures during Open Skate.
  3. Administer first aid as needed.
  4. Check rental skates in at the end of sessions.
  5. Examine skates for proper and safe condition; maintain rental skates as needed (changing laces and cleaning)
  6. Clean lobby, rest rooms, and other areas as needed.
  7. Assist manager on duty with prompt filing of accident/incident reports.
  8. Assist with birthday parties as needed.
  9. Resolve customer problems as necessary.
  10. Assist public and customers as necessary.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications   

  1. Ability to apply routine practices, rules/regulations, procedures to techniques that are relevant to assigned tasks.
  2. Previous Customer Service experience preferred.
  3. Ability to balance customer service and safety while creating a fun but orderly atmosphere.
  4. Keen memory and ability to recall details of past incidents.
  5. Be a minimum age of 15 years old.
  6. Have or be able to obtain CPR/First Aid/AED certification.
  7. Ability to present a neat, clean appearance and good hygiene.
  8. Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends.

Real Task Simulated Experience:

Skate Guard candidates will have to demonstrate their skating skills and ability to create fun and keep order.

Building Supervisor

Summary

Working under the direction of the Events Manager, the individual will be responsible for ensuring customer satisfaction in a safe, clean ice skating environment, supervising staff. Nights and Weekend availability. 

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Supervise staff to perform the necessary operations to give excellent service and maintain a clean facility.
  2. Monitor the facility for unsafe conditions, and report such conditions to the manager.
  3. Be familiar with and ensure that Cool Sports rules and emergency/safety procedures are followed.
  4. Open, close, and secure facility.
  5. Collect user fees for admission to Cool Sports.
  6. Must be able to maintain cash control of the safe and front desk drawer, as well as perform necessary financial reports.
  7. Perform all procedures for Front Desk Operation.
  8. Be familiar with job duties for all part time staff positions (Front Desk, Concessions, Party Host/Hostess, Skate Guard, etc.) and be able to fill in for them when needed.
  9. Attend required staff meetings, training, and seminars; maintain required certifications
  1. Appropriately welcome and respond to calls, questions, concerns, and feedback from customers regarding the performance of peers or other Cool Sports staff. Direct calls to appropriate personnel as needed.
  1. Assist public and customers as necessary.
  2. Assist with the various programs and skate sessions as needed.
  3. Be knowledgeable about Cool Sports activities and programs.
  4. Supervise use of building and groups when needed.
  5. Distribute general information and forms.
  6. Clean lobby, rest rooms, snack bar, and other areas as needed.
  7. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. High School diploma with the ability to read, write, and do simple mathematics.
  2. Previous supervisory experience preferred.
  3. Ability to apply routine practices, rules/regulations, procedures, or techniques that are relevant to assigned tasks.
  4. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written form with customers, supervisors, and the general public.
  5. Have or be able to obtain CPR/First Aid/AED certification.
  6. Ability to present a neat, clean appearance and good hygiene
  7. Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekday mornings, nights and weekends.

Salary:    $12.00/hr Starting Pay
